I Stopped Watching Youtube for a Month

There’s nothing worse for your brain — which was created to think and act for itself — than to be controlled by something else.

It isn’t just about quitting Youtube per se so much as it is abstaining from an activity that limits your freedom and holds back your productivity from achieving its peak. You know it very well. I’m talking about Netflix. I’m talking about your favorite social media platform whether it be Instagram, Twitter, or Reddit. I’m talking about your favorite video game that causes you to stay up late into the night, heavily compromising your to-do list for the next day— they’re all the same. So as long as it legitimately holds you back from doing what you need to do, it’s still resistance and should be contained. If left unchecked, it can gradually take hold of your freedom until you reach a point of no return.

What is resistance? How I define it here is inspired by the one on Steven Pressfield’s book, The War of Art — where resistance is this universal force that acts against human creativity.

For the sake of this article, I’m expanding that definition to mean any force that takes away clarity of thought and restricts your freedom to choose by taking you down a dopamine trip headed for addiction.
