Thoughts on the Marriage Institution and Same-Sex Marriage
Like most ex-Spanish colonies, virtually everyone in the Philippines believes in God. 90% of Filipinos are Christian and as a result, a lot of Biblical teachings permeate societal norms. I was raised in a Christian household myself and to this day, continue to be a believer.
At the same time, I strive to be an independent thinker. I don’t take everything as gospel truth unless I give it, by my own estimation, ample scrutiny.
This is why I’ve always struggled with the homosexual question. More specifically, I was unsure of my stance on same-sex marriage for a long, long time.
Whenever asked about this in the past, I would say — almost robotically — that I was against same-sex marriage. The truth was I never really had a complete answer.
The Bible teaches that God sanctioned the marriage institution as sacred and to only be between a man and a woman. Despite believing this myself, I know full well that a biblical argument won’t hold up in a public debate; especially when we’re talking about establishing government policy for a free society where the Church and State are separate.
And of course, I’ve always been empathetic to those who can only have same-sex attraction. Isn’t it a huge injustice to deprive them of the right to form a legal union…
